Flatbush, Brooklyn
The Brooklyn neighborhood where the Mailer family lived from the 1928 move from Long Branch until January 1932 — on Cortelyou Road — and where Mailer attended P.S. 181.
After leaving Long Branch in the fall of 1928, the Mailers settled in Flatbush, on Cortelyou Road, where they remained until the family’s move to Crown Heights in January 1932 (Lennon and Lennon 2018, p. 343). Mailer attended P.S. 181 (grades 1–4) during these years, and the family went on spending summers in Long Branch.
J. Michael Lennon‘s compiled list of Mailer’s residences (January 2006) gives a longer span for Cortelyou Road, 1925–33, overlapping its own start date of 1932 for Crown Street (Lennon, “Residences”). The published Days places the move from Long Branch in the fall of 1928, after the deaths of both Schneider grandparents that year; the two sources disagree.
