Crown Heights, Brooklyn
The Brooklyn neighborhood where the Mailers lived from January 1932, at 555 Crown Street — Mailer's home through P.S. 161, Boys' High School, and (between absences) the Harvard and war years.
In January 1932 the Mailer family moved from Flatbush to 555 Crown Street in Crown Heights. Mailer attended P.S. 161 — graduating in June 1935 with a recorded IQ of 170 — and then Boys’ High School (September 1935 to June 1939); his bar mitzvah was held at Temple Shaari Zadek on 15 February 1936. Crown Heights remained the family home through Mailer’s Harvard years, which began in 1939. In the spring of 1943 his parents moved to 102 Pierrepont Street in Brooklyn Heights (Lennon and Lennon 2018, p. 346); J. Michael Lennon‘s compiled list of Mailer’s residences likewise ends the Crown Street years in 1943 (Lennon, “Residences”).
