Bridgewater, Connecticut
The Connecticut town where the Mailers lived from the fall of 1956, near William Styron. It is the setting of Mailer's boxing lessons with Al Morales and of the orgone box he built there.
The Mailers moved to Bridgewater, Connecticut, in the fall of 1956, near the home of William Styron. There Mailer took up boxing under his father-in-law Al Morales and built an orgone box. A bitter falling-out with Styron and boredom with country living prompt the Mailers’ return to New York in 1958.
J. Michael Lennon‘s compiled list of Mailer’s residences (January 2006) records the house, on R.D. #1, as bought in October 1956, and has the Mailers living there through 1957, apart from a summer in Provincetown, and into 1958, when they moved to 73 Perry Street in New York (Lennon, “Residences”). Their daughter Danielle was born on 16 March 1957, during the Bridgewater years.
