Stephen Lennon’s contribution to Reflections: Norman Mailer at 100 (pp. 42–43) recalls a childhood in an Illinois house full of books, where “the idea of Norman was prominent,” and his later friendship with Mailer. As a graduate student in New York he helped clear out Mailer’s book warehouse; asked his favorite Mailer book, he answered Barbary Shore, “because I knew nobody ever read it.” He also told Mailer of his fishing boat, the Osprey, sheltering from a storm at Provincetown.
