Lawrence Schiller, remembrance
Lawrence Schiller's remembrance in Reflections: Norman Mailer at 100 (2023) of Mailer's last year: proofs of On God in Provincetown, the beginnings of the Norman Mailer Society, and Mailer editing a nurse's writing from his hospital bed.
Lawrence Schiller‘s contribution to Reflections: Norman Mailer at 100 (pp. 86–87) recalls Mailer in Provincetown in his last year, reviewing proofs of the book that became On God (“I’m prepared to die, Larry”), and how J. Michael Lennon, Bob Lucid, Barry Leeds, and John Whalen-Bridge persuaded him there to let them establish the Norman Mailer Society. Months later, hospitalized in New York, Mailer edited a nurse’s typed pages line by line from the ICU.
