Kaylie Jones‘s contribution to Reflections: Norman Mailer at 100 (pp. 28–29) recalls meeting Mailer for the first time at the February 1978 launch, at the Park Avenue Armory, of Whistle, the last novel of her father, James Jones. Mailer, once her father’s best friend and long estranged from him, told her that “the greatest regret of his life was that he hadn’t made peace with my father before he died.” They became good friends over the next forty-odd years.
