Christina Mailer-Nastasi’s contribution to Reflections: Norman Mailer at 100 (pp. 67–69) recalls visiting her grandfather at Massachusetts General Hospital in the fall of 2005, after his bypass surgery, when she was fourteen and being bullied at her new high school. Mailer compared himself to the warriors of The Iliad and gave her a card to hand to anyone who gave her a hard time.
