Robert J. Begiebing‘s “Let’s Do the Twist” (Reflections: Norman Mailer at 100, p. 10) opens with Mailer’s letter to him of 15 November 1982, after their first meeting that September: a two-hour interview in Mailer’s Brooklyn apartment while he was finishing the proofs of Ancient Evenings. As Begiebing and the photographer Christopher Johnson were leaving, he punched Chubby Checker’s “Let’s Do the Twist” on Mailer’s jukebox.
