The Seminar Table at Trinity University
Peter Balbert's remembrance in Reflections: Norman Mailer at 100 (2023) of Mailer's 1990 visit to his Mailer and Lawrence seminar at Trinity University, where a student's tossed beer can cut Mailer's hand and he stayed for four hours.
Peter Balbert’s “The Seminar Table at Trinity University” (Reflections: Norman Mailer at 100, pp. 8–9) recalls Mailer’s visit to Trinity University in San Antonio in the spring of 1990. At Balbert’s seminar on Mailer and D. H. Lawrence, a student playing Gary Gilmore in a discussion of The Executioner’s Song tossed a prop beer can that gashed Mailer’s hand. Mailer tied a handkerchief around the wound and said, “I’m ok, let us continue.”
