Notes on the text. Section breaks are white space in the magazine. The two display pull quotes and Dan Wynn’s photograph of Breslin are omitted. “Maybe it’s only righ” is the magazine’s misprint, kept; Breslin’s report of the Steinem call (“Gloria Steinem said what?”) has no closing quotation mark in print. A few spacing slips in the print are silently regularized.
