Stockbridge, Massachusetts
The Berkshire town where Mailer and Carol Stevens lived from 1972, in a house he bought on Yale Hill, until he left her for Norris Church at the end of 1975; he sold the house in 1977.
In September 1972 Mailer and Carol Stevens “move to Stockbridge, Massachusetts, where he purchases a house” (Lennon and Lennon 2018, p. 361); a photograph in the published Days shows them there with their daughter Maggie in 1973 (Lennon and Lennon 2018, p. 360). J. Michael Lennon‘s compiled list of Mailer’s residences (January 2006) places the house on Yale Hill and has Mailer there already in May and June 1972, before a July–August stay on Mount Desert Island in Maine, and then from September (Lennon, “Residences”).
Stockbridge was Mailer’s home from 1973 through 1975, with Augusts in Maine. Lennon’s list has Mailer leaving Carol Stevens in the fall of 1975 and moving in with Barbara Norris, the future Norris Church Mailer, and from January 1976 back at 142 Columbia Heights in Brooklyn; it records the sale of the Stockbridge house in 1977 (Lennon, “Residences”). The published Days dates the separation from Stevens more narrowly, to December 1975, when Mailer began living with Norris and her son Matthew in Brooklyn (Lennon and Lennon 2018, p. 362; see 1975).
