565 Commercial Street, Provincetown
The house on Commercial Street in Provincetown, formerly the Rubenstein property, that Mailer bought in June 1966 and where he spent summers with Beverly Bentley and their children until the marriage ended in 1969; he was there again in July 1977.
565 Commercial Street was the first house Mailer owned in Provincetown. In June 1966, three months after the birth of his son Stephen, he “purchases a house in Provincetown, where he will live with Beverly and their children until 1969” (Lennon and Lennon 2018, p. 356). J. Michael Lennon‘s compiled list of Mailer’s residences (January 2006) names the house as 565 Commercial Street, “former Rubenstein property,” and sets the purchase among the family’s Provincetown summers of 1964–69: in 1965 they had rented the apartment of Joseph Acker (Lennon, “Residences”).
In the list the house is a summer home; 142 Columbia Heights in Brooklyn remained the year-round base through 1969. After Mailer separated from Beverly Bentley in the late summer of 1969 he spent the fall and winter at 1 Miller Hill Road in Provincetown, not on Commercial Street (Lennon, “Residences”). The list next records him at 565 Commercial Street in July 1977 (Lennon, “Residences”); when the house left his hands is not recorded there.
