A between-books year of journalism, controversy, and film. Mailer publishes the last of his three Life moon installments (70.1), comments publicly on the Chicago Seven trial (70.3, 70.4, 70.6), serves a brief jail term for the 1967 Pentagon protest while calling Nixon “Uriah Heep” (70.8–70.11), and premieres his film Maidstone at Venice and London (70.12, 70.13). The three Life pieces are gathered as Of a Fire on the Moon (71.1), published January 1971. Per the editor’s practice, every legacy entry receives its own Work page.
